Happy Leap Day! Storytime @ Handley Regional Library

Happy Leap Day storytime title card 300dpi

Leap Day comes but once every four years, so how could we pass up the opportunity for lots of leaping and jumping with our storytime friends?  Come and get your exercise with us as we join the frogs, kangaroos, rabbits, and joyful children as we leap into a few good books at storytime.  Here are a few of the stories, poems, and songs that we’ll be sharing this week, so you can keep singing, playing, and reading with your little ones at home.

Leap Year Poem

BY MOTHER GOOSE (Links to the Poetry Foundation collection of Mother Goose Poems)

Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting February alone,
And that has twenty-eight days clear
And twenty-nine in each leap year.
Jack Be Nimble
Jack be nimble,
Jack be quick,
Jack jump over
The candlestick.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs

Five green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
Then there were four green and speckled frogs.

Four green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
Then there were three green and speckled frogs.

Three green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
Then there were two green and speckled frogs.

Two green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
Then there was one green and speckled frogs.

One green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
Then there were no green and speckled frogs.

Hop With Me (Tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)

Hop, hop, hop along
Or bounce on someone’s knee
Higher and higher and higher and higher
Bunny-hop with me!

Here is a Bunny Fingerplay

Here is a bunny with ears so funny (hold up index and middle fingers for ears)
And here is his hole in the ground (make a circle with the other hand)
At the first sound he hears, he pricks up his ears (extend two fingers)
And hops in the hole in the ground (fingers jump into the hole)

Baby Bunny Bounce

Baby bunny bounces high;  (Older children jump; babies bounce on caregiver’s knee.)
Baby bunny bounces low; (Jump low)
Baby bunny blinks his eyes; (Blink eyes as you point to them)
Baby Bunny waves good-bye. (Wave good-bye)

We hope to see you at storytime!
