Fall is Here! We love it!  And here are a few Fall picture books we love and will be sharing with you at storytimes this week:

Books to Share:

Book Jacket for: Leaf Man

  • Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert – JE Ehlert

Lois Ehlert’s Leaf Man takes a new spin on the artist’s technique of collage illustrations: each collage here is made up of real leaves.  The meditative, rhythmic story encourages readers to let their imaginations roam and create.

Songs, Poems, and Fingerplays to Share

Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
Swish your bushy tail.
Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
Swish your bushy tail.

Wrinkle up your little nose,
Put a nut between your toes.
Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,
Swish your bushy tail.

Leaves are Falling Down (Sing to the tune of “Frere Jaques”)

Leaves are falling, leaves are falling,
On the ground, on the ground
Rake them in a pile,
Rake them in a pile,
Then jump in.
Then jump in.

The Leaves are Falling Down (Sing to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell”)

The leaves are falling down
The leaves are falling down
Red, Yellow, Green, and Brown
The Leaves are falling down.

Five Little Leaves

Five little leaves on the tree next door
One fell off and then there were four
Four little leaves all over the tree
One fell off and then there were three
Three little leaves where the wind blew
One fell off and then there were two
Two little leaves sitting in the sun
One fell off and then there was one
One little leaf in the tree all alone
The wind blew and blew now there are none!

Two Little Blackbirds

Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill.
One named Jack and one named Jill.
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill.
Come back Jack, come back Jill.

Two little blackbirds flying in the sky.
One named Low and one named High…

Two little blackbirds sitting on a pole.
One named Fast and one named Slow…

Two little blackbirds sitting on a gate…
One named Early and one named Late…

Make your own Leaf Men!  Lois Ehlert’s book provides a perfect prompt for making your own leaf collage creatures as well as an excuse to go on a long nature walk.  As a bonus, take the book with you on your search for leaves; the endpapers serve as a miniature leaf-identification guide.

We hope to see you at storytime!
