Fire Engine Fever! at HRL

We’ve got Fire Engine Fever at Handley Regional Library!

(Pictures from Stephens City Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company’s visit to Bowman Library from last year.)

This week, October 8th – 14th, is Fire Prevention Week.  Not only is this an important subject for your kids to learn about, but it is also one most kids love!  So with that in mind, we’ve packed this week full of firefighter stories, visits, and activities!  Thanks to the Stephens City Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company and to the Rouss Fire Company in Winchester for visiting HRL and teaching the kids about firefighters.

You can find more resources for teaching your children Fire Safety at the National Fire Protection Association’s kids page :

Here are some Fire Safety songs and poems to share at home:

Never, Never Play With Matches (Sing to the tune of “Frere Jaques”)
Never, never play with matches
That won’t do, that won’t do
You might burn your fingers,
You might burn your fingers,
That won’t do! That won’t do!

Ten Little Firefighters
One little, two little, three little firefighters,
Four little, five little, six little firefighters,
Seven little, eight little, nine little firefighters,
Ten little firefighters brave!
Ten little, nine little, eight little firefighters,
Seven little, six little, five little firefighters,
Four little, three little, two little firefighters,
One little firefighter brave.

Fire Truck Song (Sing to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”)
I’m a big red fire truck, long and stout,
When I am needed, I roar and shout.
People love to see me rush about.
Just turn me on and head me out.

I’m a big red fire truck, stout and long,
Here is my ladder, tall and strong.
When I get a call, you’ll hear my song,
Just climb aboard and turn me on.

Always Alert
I’m a smoke detector and I say “Beep!”            (Squat down)
I’m your nose when you’re asleep.            (point to nose, then pretend to sleep)
If there’s a fire and smoke is all around,            (wiggle fingers like flames)
I’ll wake you up with a very loud sound.            (jump up and raise your hands high)
