Happy Birthday, Rosemary Wells! Storytime

Happy Birthday, Rosemary Wells!

January 29th marks the birthday of author and illustrator Rosemary Wells, a long-time favorite of children and parents.  She has a knack for creating characters who children connect with and learn to love. In our storytimes this week, we’ll be sharing some of our favorite characters created by Wells.

What is your favorite book by her?

Here are some of our favorite Rosemary Wells books for storytime:

You can find these books and more in our catalog by searching for the tag: #rosemarywellsstorytime

Rhymes and Fingerplays to Share:

Hop With Me (Tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Hop, hop, hop along
Or bounce on someone’s knee
Higher and higher and higher and higher
Bunny-hop with me!

Baby Bunny Bounce (Older children jump; babies bounce on caregiver’s knee.)
Baby bunny bounces high;
Baby bunny bounces low;  (Jump low)
Baby bunny blinks his eyes;  (Blink eyes as you point to them)
Baby Bunny waves good-bye.  (Wave good-bye)

Toast in the Toaster
Toast in the toaster
Getting very hot!
Tick, tock, Tick, tock
Up you pop!

Up and Down
Up and down (move hands up and down)
Round and round (hands go round each other)
Put your fingers on the ground
Over (hold hands above lap)
Under (move hands below legs)
In between (you’ve hidden your hands in between your legs)
Now my fingers can’t be seen!
Hands in front
Hands behind
Now my hands I cannot find
Here is my left hand
Here is my right
Hands and fingers back in sight (wriggle fingers)

Five Little Bunnies
(Hold five fingers up)
Hippety hop and hippety hay,
Five little bunnies went out to play.
Hippety hop and hippety hay,
One little bunny hopped away.

(Count down to zero)
Hippety hop and hippety hay,
No more bunnies are playing today,
Hippety hop and hippety hay,
I hope they come back another day.

Here is a Bunny
Here is a bunny     (Hold up index and middle fingers.)
With ears so funny.     (Wiggle fingers.)
And here is his
Hole in the ground.     (Make hole with fist of the other hand.)
When a sound he hears,
He pricks up his ears,     (Wiggle fingers.)
Then hops to his
Hole in the ground!     (Pretend to hop bunny ears into the hole.)

We hope you can join us for storytime at one of our Handley Regional Library Branches this week!

Check the calendar for the dates and times of storytimes at your local branch library.
