Young writers hold up their certificates at the finale.
Congratulations to the Young Writers who participated in the NaNoWriMo program at Handley Regional Library! This year’s group of talented, enthusiastic writers made huge strides on their novels, with about half fully completing their novels over the course of November. We look forward to someday having your novels on our shelves here at the library!
The Young Writers Groups at Handley and Bowman Libraries celebrated their participation with a finale party; writers received participant or winner certificates if they met their word-count goals and completed their novels. The Bowman Library group had 8 winners this year and Handley Library had 4.
Young Writers hold aloft their imprisoned inner editors.
The philosophy of the NaNoWriMo project is to silence one’s inner editor and, by shutting out that critical inner voice, free yourself to get all your story down on paper. Once you’ve completed a rough draft of your novel, you’re a winner and have completed NaNoWriMo. But the writer’s job doesn’t end there. After the story is out of your head, it’s time to unleash your inner editor on it.
Even though Handley Regional Library’s NaNoWriMo Young Writers’ Program has ended, the Young Writers have decided to keep moving forward with their novel-writing aspirations. They have decided to form a community writer’s group, Cubez, with the motto “Think outside the box.” They will continue to meet monthly at the library and invite all young writers in middle and high school to join them on the first Tuesday of each month at 6PM.
Calling all aspiring writers in middle and high school! You’re invited to join your fellow young writers in the Handley Regional Library’s National Novel Writing Month Young Writer’s Program.
Register online at http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/ to set goals and track your progress, and join us Mondays at 6PM – 7:30PM at Handley Library or Tuesdays 6PM – 7:15PM at Bowman Library.
Young writers listen for instructions as they prepare to get writing.
The first meeting, a launch party to kick off your novel-writing efforts, is tonight, Monday October 26, from 6PM – 7:30PM. Bowman Library’s launch party will be tomorrow, Tue, October 27, from 6:00PM – 7:15PM.
Young writers hold up the box with their incarcerated inner editors.
Come prepared to lay your inner editor to rest for the duration of the month while you challenge your writing skills with writing dares, word wars, writing tips, and writing frenzies. There’ll be food, fun, and prizes.
Young writers read aloud selections from their work to the group.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share your work to gain feedback from your community of fellow writers.

November is National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo for short.
NaNoWriMo is a nation-wide creative writing project that began in 1999. It challenges participants to write a novel over the course of the month of November. It’s designed to get people writing – no matter how bad they think their writing might be!
The year that NaNoWriMo started, there were just 21 participants. As of October 23rd this year, 131,559 writers had signed up to take part. The NaNoWriMo website tracks the number of words produced by each writer and compiles numbers for the whole country.
As part of NaNoWriMo, Handley Regional Library will be hosting a young writers’ program. This year, both Bowman and Handley libraries will offer NaNoWriMo “Write-Ins”. Teens can come to the library at the specific time to set goals, share progress and participate in writing-related activities. There will even be prizes up for grabs!
Our Young Writer’s Program will be launched on Tuesday October 29th at 6:00pm at Bowman Library, and on Wednesday October 30th at 6:00pm at Handley Library.
Write-Ins will take place at Bowman Library on November 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 6:00pm, and at Handley Library on November 6,13,20 & 27 at 6:00pm.
