Get Fit with Storytimes at Handley Regional Library

Froggy RFTW_ENGStorytimes are back!  We’re getting ready for the Valley Reads Summer Reading program, and we can’t wait to Read for the Win with you!  Learn more about our upcoming Summer Reading program at the link above, or ask a Youth Services staff member next time you visit your branch of the library and we’ll be happy to get your started.

iRead2016-3As we get ready to Read for the Win, our storytime this week is focused on fitness. In young children, developing physical skills are closely tied to growing cognitive skills.  Of course we all know that physical activity and fitness is important to health, but did you know that studies have found a memory boost from physical activity?  Students in one study improved their math and spelling scores by doing physical activities while studying. Read more at the link.

So if you have a wiggly toddler or preschooler, take heart: storytimes are designed for active little ones.  We work to harness that energy and tie learning into their natural love of movement.

Here are a few of our favorite fitness themed picture books, songs, and games for you to keep reading, singing, and learning with your little ones at home.

Rally for Summer Reading!

read to the rhythm imageBanjo frogGet ready to join the rest of the Valley and try out a new, fun summer reading program called Valley Reads. Come and celebrate the opening of registration with the Rally for Reading at the Bowman Library this Saturday, May 30th from 10:00am to 12:30pm.

Put on your dancing shoes and tune up your singing voice because this year’s theme is “Read to the Rhythm.”  We’ll be exploring music, song, dance, and rhythm throughout the summer with books, programs, and special events.  Track your reading and attendance at events and you’ll earn free books, collect badges, unlock online mini-games, and be eligible to enter a drawing at the end of the summer for prizes donated by local businesses.

Visit the Handley Regional Library Valley Reads page to learn more about the program, find locations to register, or register online once registration opens on Saturday, May 30th.

Summer Reading Program

Summer vacation is just around the corner and we think one of the best ways to spend some of that free time is reading. In between all the swimming, movies, ice creams, beach trips…and all that other fun summer stuff… we’d like to suggest taking some time to…pause…and read!

SRP1

Paws to Read is the theme of our 2014 Summer Reading Program, which we are launching this Saturday, May 31st at Bowman Library. Join us from 11:00am to 12:30pm for the Rally for Reading.

SRP4

Being a part of the Paws to Read summer program is easy. Just click here or visit your local library to sign up. Log every minute that you spend reading or listening to stories and magazines. For every 360 minutes of reading that you complete, you earn a free book from one of our book trunks.

We are always happy to help make sure that your summer is full of reading fun, so please come and see us if you have any questions about Paws to Read, or if you’d like some help choosing reading material.

Looking forward to seeing you at Bowman Library this Saturday!
